Early Long Island Landscape

I started painting out on Long Island with Paul Georges in Bridgehampton and Sagaponac in 1972.

We used to paint a lot out at the Morton Wild Life Refuge at Jessup's Neck.

Fairfield Porter used to come over to paint with Paul in the backyard with it's view of the Pond.

These are 1973-4.

Later I painted a lot at Barcelona Neck in the Nothwest Woods of East Hampton looking back towards Sag Harbor.

These are from early 1990's, I still go there when I can.

In 1989 and the early 90's I stayed through the summers at Cranberry Hole Road in Napeague. I started making Still-life paintings in the backyard as I had at Paul's through the 70's.

I would also paint at the Ocean.

This one is 1995.

This is Barcelona Neck,  I've used it for a lot of larger studio paintings. I only paint directly and  use no photos. I take a lot of photos but they are usually of little use to me except as a kind of reference of content or when I was there, almost never for formal information.

I started making still-life paintings in 1989 again.

At Cranberry Hole Road in 1990, I think.

Then sunflowers out at Barcelona Neck.

I made a bunch of these in 1995 my last year out there as a resident.

More Sunflowers.

I made some more still-lifes with daylilies and trumpet vine as I had earlier.

I return now and then to paint in Spring and Fall usually.

Once one gets to a spot it's often as beautiful as ever. I feel pretty out of place doing this anymore though. I'm much more comfortable out west.

The paintings feel an idealism and I guess that is their irony.

These are the latest from 2007.

Cedar Point where most of these are made is still out of the way.
